The Udine Hydroelectric Power
plant Group has 309 MW installed capacity. It includess the hydroelectric
plants located in Friuli Venezia Giulia exploiting the waters of Cellina
torrent, Isonzo and Tagliamento rivers and of some confluents of the latter, with
the dams, the water collecting works, thepower plants, the associated
electrical stations and all the relevant facilities.
The eight
main plants are connected to the high voltage grid (Asta del Tagliamento and
Asta del Cellina) and the eighteen smaller ones (located in the territory of
the provinces of Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone) are, connected to the medium
voltage grid . All the plants of the Hydroelectric Power Plant Group are remote
controlled from the Centralized Remote Control Station of Sesto San Giovanni in
the province of Milan.

The first hydroelectric plants in
Friuli Venezia Giulia were implemented at the end of the 19th century. A
plant of large size for that time was designed in 1897 by engineers Salice and
Zenari. The project foresaw the use of the water of the Cellina torrent by
means of Malnisio and Giais power plants, for a total power of 14,000 HP (10.4
MW).
Malnisio power plant, commissioned in 1905, supplied Venice city with a 30,000 volt, 87 km powerline. The Giais power plant,
commissioned in 1908, supplied Udine town with a 30,000 volt 45 km powerline. In 1919 the Partidor power plant was commissioned, erected downstream
the Giais power plant.
A large impulse to the development of
hydroelectric plants in Friuli was given by the Società Adriatica di
Elettricità (SADE) that implemented the plants of the Tagliamento River (Ampezzo 1948, Somplago, 1957) and the completion of Cellina plants (Barcis, San Foca and
Villa Rinaldi in 1954).
In 2006, the new headquarters offices of theHydroelectric
Power plant Group(previously located in Udine) were opened, at the Somplago
power plant.

All activities that interact or may interact with
the environment are managed in accordance with the ruling environmental
standards and the available state-of-art techniques.
The management
of the Udine Hydroelectric Power Plant Group has implemented an Environmental Management
System that was certified in July 2004 according to the UNI EN ISO Standard 14001 and started the activities for future
voluntary acceptance of the EU Ecomanagement and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
