Hystorical background

The hydroelectric power plant at Olevano on Tusciano is one of the  first hydroelectric power plants erected in Italy in the period between end of XIX century and early XX century and is the  first erected by SME (Società Meridionale di Elettricità) in the south of Italy.
The original project dates back to 1895. The works were started in  1901 and completed in 1905.

A 30 kV line transported the “power” to the industries at Torre Annunziata

Once the water bond granted as “railway water storage” elapsed (it was a kind of pre-emption in favour of the railway electrification that limited the flow-rate to  1,900 litres/sec.),  a second penstock was installed in year 1924, when the old Girard turbines were replaced with two new Pelton turbines.
In 1934, a power station and an outdoor 150 kV panel were constructed, close to the hydroelectric power plant, to receive the incoming lines from the Sila.

In 1955, the hydroelectric power plant was expanded with consequent increase in the power capacity. In 2001, after the plant retrofitting, both penstocks were replaced with  asingleone.
