The TUSCIANO- Hydroelectric Power Plant Group, with an installed capacity of about 96 MW, includes eight hydroelectric power plants (one is not in
operation) All plants of the Hydroelectric Power Group are remote controlled
from the Centralized Remote Control Station of Sesto San Giovanni (Milan).

The
hydroelectric power plant at Olevano on Tusciano is one of the first
hydroelectric power plants erected in Italy in the period between end of
XIX century and early XX century and is the first erected by SME (Società Meridionale di Elettricità) in the south of Italy.
The original project dates back to 1895. The works
were started in 1901 and completed in 1905.
A 30 kV line
transported the “power” to the industries at Torre Annunziata
Once the water
bond granted as “railway water storage” elapsed (it was a kind of pre-emption
in favour of the railway electrification that limited the flow-rate to 1,900 litres/sec.),
a second penstock was installed in year 1924, when the old Girard turbines
were replaced with two new Pelton turbines.
In 1934, a power station and an outdoor 150 kV panel were
constructed, close to the hydroelectric power plant, to receive the incoming
lines from the Sila.
In 1955, the
hydroelectric power plant was expanded with consequent increase in the power
capacity. In 2001, after the plant retrofitting, both penstocks
were replaced with asingleone.

All activities
that interact or may interact with the environment are managed in accordance
with the ruling environmental standards and the available state-of-the-art
techniques.
The management
of the Tusciano Hydroelectric Power Plant Group has implemented an
Environmental Management System that was certified according to the UNI EN ISO
Standard 14001 in June 2006.
To foster
the ongoing improvement of the environmental performances and the information
to the public, the management of the Group
has voluntarily adopted the EU Ecomanagement and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and was registered in March 21, 2007 with the number IT-000618.
