THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:
WHAT THEY ARE, THEIR PURPOSE
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a managerial instrument that enables an organization to:
- draw up an environmental policy;
- identify and control the elements of its activity that may interact with the environment (also known as "environmental aspects");
- define objectives for the improvement of its environmental performances, in line with the environmental policy;
- continually check the compliance of its activities against current standards and environmental objectives;
- periodically review the EMS implementation process and to which degree the objectives have been reached.
A fundamental element in the implementation of an EMS is the involvement of all levels of the organization and the awareness of their role and responsibilities in company environmental management. Thus, environmental issues become an integral part of company management. In this way, companies are invited to undertake personal responsibility and adopt a proactive approach to environmental protection. The objective of an Environmental Management System is to improve environmental performance of the organization. An accredited third party certifies Environmental Management System in accordance to the international reference standard. The certification allows to document the company environmental management outside the organization. The international reference standard for the certification of the Environmental Management Systems is UNI EN ISO 14001.
